🇦🇺 German Pension Refund for Australian Citizens

As an Australian citizen, you can generally claim a German pension refund if you have fewer than 60 German contribution months, at least 24 months have passed since your last mandatory pension contribution in Germany, the EU, the UK, Türkiye or an ex-Yugoslav country, and you live outside the EU and the UK. Paying superannuation does not block your claim. Some Australian cases require two original signed documents by post — one envelope, prepared by us.

Do I Qualify for a German Pension Refund as an Australian Citizen?

The Social Security Agreement between Germany and Australia outlines the eligibility criteria for claiming a pension refund.

As an Australian citizen, you can claim a refund of your German pension contributions if you have worked in Germany for less than 5 years (60 months) — including any periods where you received unemployment benefits or maternity/paternity pay.

Likewise, at least 24 months must have passed since your last mandatory pension contribution in Germany, the EU, the UK, Türkiye or an ex-Yugoslav country, and you must live outside the EU and the UK. Living in Australia never blocks your claim — and neither does paying superannuation.

The 60-month rule for Australian citizens

Any calendar month with at least one day of paid contributions counts as a full month. Periods of employment, unemployment benefits and parental leave all count toward the 60 months. Stay under 60 and the refund route is open; from 60 months, you have instead earned a German old-age pension at retirement age — payable worldwide, including in Australia.

The one envelope — Australia's paper exception

Most Australian claims are handled by one specific pension office, Deutsche Rentenversicherung Oldenburg-Bremen — and since 2026, that office requires two documents as hand-signed originals by post: the power of attorney and the payment declaration. Everything else stays digital. We prepare both documents completely, you sign them, and one envelope to the address we provide is your entire paper journey — no other originals, ever.

The exception to the exception: if your German social security number begins with a number from 38 to 89, a different office handles your claim, and your entire process is digital end to end.

When can you apply?

24 full calendar months after your last mandatory pension contribution in Germany, the EU, the UK, Türkiye, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia or Serbia — counted from the last month of employment or credited benefits, not from your deregistration date. Eligibility is checked at the date of your application: you can take up work in the EU again the day after submitting, and a later return does not undo a claim that was valid when filed.

One honest note: the German pension office can see EU and UK insurance records — the systems are digitally connected. Claiming while actually living or insured in the EU or UK surfaces retrospectively, the refund is reclaimed, and legal consequences can follow. If your situation is unclear, ask us first.

How much can you get back?

In 2026 so far, the average refund our clients received is €12,634 — real results range from under €200 to over €38,000. The exact sum depends on your individual situation. Refundable contributions include:

100% of the pension contributions withheld from your salary during employment in Germany.

50% of voluntary contributions made, such as those from freelance work.

Adjustments for contributions added or deducted due to pension equalization following a divorce before a German court.

Since 2018, pension insurance contributions have been set at 9.3% of your gross earnings, up to a monthly income threshold (Beitragsbemessungsgrenze). In 2026, this threshold is €8,450 (2025: €8,050). Earnings exceeding this limit are not subject to contributions.

How much does it cost to claim my refund?

We charge a service fee of 9.75% of the refunded amount, capped at a maximum of €2,500 even for very large refunds — covering VAT and all external legal expenses. There are no extra charges or undisclosed costs. You pay nothing unless your refund is successfully processed — payment is only required after you receive your refund.

What you need to apply

Your valid passport, your German pension number (Versicherungsnummer) — our German social security number guide explains where to find it — your approximate employment dates and employers, your current address and bank details, plus your deregistration certificate (Abmeldung), if you have one. Missing something? We can recover your pension number and handle the deregistration in your name. You don't need to obtain your insurance record first — the final refund statement (Bescheid) shows it in full.

How digital is the process?

Almost entirely. You submit your details and sign everything online, and we handle all communication with the pension office. For most Australian cases, the one envelope described above is the only paper that ever travels — and one document needs a notary: a short Certificate of Life and Nationality we prepare for you, notarized online or at any local notary, with the scan sent back the same day.

Do I need a German bank account?

No. Your refund goes through an escrow account managed by a German law firm, then transfers to the bank account you choose, in the currency you choose — Australian accounts included, and the account can even be held in someone else's name.

How long does it take?

Our streamlined process takes only 8 weeks on average, compared to the 6+ months it often takes for self-submitted claims — we prepare each claim so it can be processed as efficiently as possible, we have expert knowledge of Australia as a contracting state, and our partner law firm has a direct connection to the German pension office.

Processing times ultimately depend on the responsible pension office, though. Some claims take longer because of departmental workloads or internal checks; a smaller number take up to six months, and exceptional cases longer still. That's normal — your entitlement doesn't shrink while you wait, and from the seventh month after a complete application, the pension office owes you 4% annual interest on top.

And you're never waiting alone: if your claim hasn't completed within about three months, we contact the pension office directly to check the status and clear avoidable delays; at six months, we escalate to the office's management. The six-month mark also has a legal meaning in your favor — it's not a deadline for your claim, but the point where German law gives you the right to formally act against an inactive office (Untätigkeitsklage). We keep you updated throughout, even when nothing is required from you.
