To qualify for a refund as a Bosnian citizen:

You need to live outside the EU and former Yugoslav states (including Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, and Kosovo).

You must wait a minimum of 24 months since your last pension contribution in Germany.

If you reside in Bosnia and Herzegovina or any other former Yugoslav country, you will not be eligible for a refund. Instead, you must wait until you reach the German retirement age before you can start receiving your pension.

How Much Money Can I Expect from My German Pension Refund?

Typically, you will be refunded for:

Since 2018, the pension contribution rate has been 9.3% of your gross salary, up to a capped maximum income (Beitragsbemessungsgrenze). In 2025, this cap is €8,050 per month. Income exceeding this threshold is not subject to pension deductions and is not included in refund calculations.
