German Pension Refund Eligibility for Tunisian Citizens

If you are a Tunisian national who has spent time working in Germany, you could be entitled to a refund of your pension contributions, depending on your unique circumstances. Whether your work was permanent, part-time, or on a freelance basis, the German pension system offers a legal process of getting the contributions back for many non-EU citizens, including nationals of Tunisia.

Who Can Claim a German Pension Refund as a Tunisian Citizen?

To qualify for a refund as a Tunisian citizen:

  • You need to be residing outside of the European Union or United Kingdom

  • You have waited at least 24 months since your last contribution to the German pension scheme.

If you are currently living in Germany or another EU country, you cannot claim a pension refund before reaching retirement age. Once you reach retirement age, you may be eligible for a refund only if your total pension contributions across all EU countries amount to less than 60 months. Refunds before retirement age—such as those typically claimed after two years of working in Germany—are not available to residents of the EU or UK.

Can I Still Return to Germany or the EU After Applying for a Refund?

Yes, absolutely.

Applying for a German pension refund does not prohibit you from moving back to Germany or elsewhere in the EU. If you file your refund claim today, you’re still free to return at any point in the future — even for work, study, or permanent residency.

Your employment and residency status are only taken into account at the moment of applying for the pension refund. After that, your application remains valid regardless of future plans.

How Much Money Can I Expect from My German Pension Refund?

The refund amount depends on your earnings and contribution history during your time in Germany. On average, applicants receive around €11,800, but this can vary significantly.

Typically, you will be refunded:

  • 100% of all mandatory pension contributions deducted from your salary

  • 50% of any voluntary contributions you made, such as during self-employment or freelance work

  • Special circumstances, such as pension sharing during a divorce, may also impact the final sum.

Since 2018, the pension contribution rate has been 9.3% of your gross salary, capped at a monthly limit known as the Beitragsbemessungsgrenze. In 2025, this cap is €8,050 per month. Any income above this amount is not subject to pension deductions and will not be refunded.

What Are the Costs for Claiming My German Pension Refund?

We believe in results, not empty promises.

That’s why we operate under a simple success-based fee model:

  • No in-advance payments

  • No hidden charges

  • No risk to you

Our fee is 9.75% of the final refund amount you receive. This includes VAT and covers all legal, administrative, and service costs. You only pay once your refund has been successfully deposited into your account.

Is a German Bank Account Required to Get My Refund?

Not at all. Tunisian citizens living in Tunisia must receive their pension refund directly from the German pension authority to a local Tunisian bank account due to strict foreign exchange regulations and the Social Security Agreement between Germany and Tunisia.

However, if you live outside Tunisia, this restriction does not apply. In that case, your refund can be transferred via a secure escrow account managed by a certified German law firm and sent to any bank account worldwide—whether it’s your own or a trusted third party’s.
